How Do I Choose The Right Cat Boarding Room For My Cat?

Hotel for Cats Sydney Cat Boarding

Choosing cat boarding is one thing.

Choosing which room your puddycat should stay in can be much harder.

At Hotel for Cats, our accommodation ranges from spacious Grand Suites and The Estate through to our apartment-sized Penthouses, as well as Junior Suites, Senior Suites and private Condo accommodation.

The best place to start is by thinking about how your cat actually spends their day at home.

Do they love windows, height and plenty of territory to explore?

Do they move from bed to bed depending on the time of day?

Do they like watching everything going on around them?

Or are they an older puddycat who prefers easy access to their favourite resting spots?

The right room can make a real difference to how much a cat enjoys their stay.

Quick Answer

When choosing a cat boarding room, consider:

  • How much space your cat is used to
  • Whether they enjoy climbing and exploring
  • Whether they love looking out of windows
  • Their age and mobility
  • Whether one or more cats from your family are staying together
  • The length of their stay
  • The features you would like them to have while you are away

For cats who enjoy space, windows and plenty to investigate, our larger accommodation — including the Grand Suites, The Estate and Penthouses — gives them more choice in where they sleep, climb, play and watch the world.

You can compare all of our rooms and suites before deciding which one suits your puddycat.

Start With How Your Cat Lives at Home

One of the easiest ways to choose a room is to look at what your cat already enjoys.

Some cats spend their days moving between a sunny window, a high shelf, the sofa and somebody’s bed.

Others like to be right in the middle of everything and want to know exactly what is happening outside their window.

Cats like these often make excellent use of a larger room.

More space means more resting spots, more levels to explore and more opportunity to choose where they want to spend their time.

For an active or curious puddycat, this can be a big part of their holiday.

Grand Suites: More Space to Explore

Our Grand Suites Collection is a great choice for cats who enjoy having room to move around and plenty to investigate.

The suites are individually designed and include generous floor space, climbing shelves, elevated resting areas and large windows.

Depending on the particular suite, there may also be features such as a television, window seat or cat wheel.

The collection includes rooms such as Safari Lodge, Lakehouse, Loft, Boho Pad, Longitude 151 and The Bookshop.

These rooms work particularly well for cats who like to explore different levels and change where they sleep throughout the day.

They also give our guests more choice.

And, as most cat owners know, having several perfectly good sleeping spots to choose from is extremely important when you plan to ignore all of them and sleep somewhere unexpected.

The Estate: Space, Windows and a Corner View

For cats who love watching the world, The Estate is one of our standout rooms.

It is a large corner suite with two substantial windows, giving puddycats plenty to look at throughout the day.

There is generous space for climbing, resting and moving between different areas of the room.

It can be particularly appealing for curious cats who spend much of their time at home sitting at windows and keeping an eye on the neighbourhood.

There is only one Estate, so if this is the room you have in mind, it is worth booking once your travel dates are confirmed.

When Should I Choose a Penthouse?

If your cat is used to plenty of space at home, or you simply want them to have a particularly spacious stay, our Penthouses are the top end of the Hotel for Cats accommodation.

The Penthouse level was once a four-bedroom human apartment.

Those bedrooms now belong to our feline guests.

Our largest rooms are comparable in size to human bedrooms and include large windows, climbing furniture, human-sized beds and plenty of space to move around.

Selected rooms also include cat wheels, televisions and secure window catios.

The Clowder Penthouse is our largest suite and is particularly suited to families of cats staying together or puddycats who simply love having lots of territory.

The Terrace Penthouse is another large room with substantial windows, climbing furniture, a cat wheel and a secure window catio.

For cats who like to patrol, climb, stretch out and change sleeping positions approximately 14 times before lunch, the extra space gives them plenty of options.

Are Larger Rooms Better for Longer Stays?

They can be particularly worthwhile.

For a longer stay, extra space gives a cat more opportunity to move between different resting areas, explore different levels and enjoy a little more variety in their environment.

Large windows and climbing areas can also provide plenty to watch and investigate during the day.

If your cat is staying for a few weeks and normally has the run of a house or apartment, you may prefer to choose one of our larger rooms for that reason.

For longer holidays, the Grand Suites, The Estate and Penthouses are often worth considering first.

What Is the Best Room for Two or More Cats?

When cats from the same family are staying together, space becomes even more valuable.

Even cats who adore one another do not necessarily want to sleep side by side every minute of the day.

A larger suite gives them the ability to:

  • Choose separate beds
  • Sit at different heights
  • Move away from one another when they want some quiet time
  • Explore without being on top of each other

Our Grand Suites, The Estate and Penthouses are particularly well suited to families of cats who need more room.

We only board cats together if they already live together at home. Cats from different households are never mixed.

Our guide to cats sharing a room while boarding explains this in more detail.

What About Senior Cats?

For older puddycats, accessibility may be more important than height.

Our dedicated Senior Suites have lower platforms and easier-access resting areas, making them a good option for cats who are beginning to slow down or find jumping more difficult.

That said, age alone does not determine the room.

Some older cats remain incredibly active and still enjoy a larger suite with plenty of space.

The important thing is to think about how your cat moves now.

If they hesitate before jumping, avoid high shelves or have arthritis or another mobility issue, our Senior Suites may suit them better.

What About Junior Suites?

Our Junior Suites are a good option for individual cats who would still like their own private space, shelving and comfortable resting areas.

They offer more room than our Condo accommodation and suit many cats very well.

We also have two Executive Junior Suites, which are slightly larger and have an outlook towards the church.

You can see how they compare with our larger accommodation on the Rooms & Suites page.

Does My Cat Need to Be Very Active to Enjoy a Bigger Room?

Not at all.

Extra space is not just about running around.

Many cats use a larger room simply by moving between several favourite resting places during the day.

They may spend the morning in a window, move to a bed in the afternoon and then take themselves up to a higher shelf when they want some peace.

For cats, having choices within their environment can be just as valuable as active play.

What If My Cat Is Nervous?

A nervous cat does not necessarily need a small room.

Many cautious cats settle beautifully in larger accommodation once they have had time to explore it at their own pace.

What matters most is how the room is introduced and how the cat is handled.

Our feline butlers do not force interaction.

Some guests are ready for attention immediately.

Others would prefer their room service delivered discreetly while they conduct a full background check on their new staff.

We allow each puddycat to settle in their own way.

What If My Cat Needs Medication?

Needing medication does not prevent your cat from enjoying one of our larger rooms.

Our trained team can administer most oral and topical medications when arrangements are made in advance.

You can read more in our guide to cat boarding with medication.

Hotel for Cats also has veterinary support available on site, so veterinary assessment and additional care can be arranged if a health concern arises during a guest’s stay.

How Far Ahead Should I Choose a Room?

If you have your heart set on a particular Grand Suite, The Estate or one of the Penthouses, it is better to book early.

There are only a limited number of these rooms and popular travel periods can fill quickly.

Once your travel dates are confirmed, choosing your room early gives you the best chance of securing the accommodation you want.

Our guide to how far in advance to book cat boarding explains this in more detail.

What Matters Most?

The room matters.

But so does what happens inside it.

Our team monitors each guest’s eating, drinking, toileting and behaviour and gets to know how they prefer to interact.

Some puddycats want their feline butler sitting beside them for an extended smooching session.

Others would like breakfast delivered efficiently, the curtains opened and staff to please leave the premises.

Both approaches are perfectly acceptable.

The extra space and features of our larger rooms give cats more choice in how they spend their day, while our team provides the individual care around them.

So Which Room Should I Choose?

Start by asking:

  1. Does my cat enjoy plenty of space at home?
  2. Do they spend a lot of time looking out of windows?
  3. Do they enjoy climbing or sitting up high?
  4. Will more than one cat be staying together?
  5. Are they staying for an extended period?
  6. Would I like them to have extra space and features while I am away?

If you answer yes to several of these, it is worth looking first at the Grand Suites Collection, The Estate or our Penthouses.

For senior cats with reduced mobility, or cats who need something a little different, we also have accommodation designed to suit those needs.

Hotel for Cats is located in Blakehurst and welcomes feline guests from Hurstville, St George, the Sutherland Shire and across Sydney.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Hotel for Cats rooms have the most space?

Our Penthouses are our largest rooms, followed by accommodation such as The Estate and our Grand Suites. They are ideal for owners looking for generous space, large windows and additional features.

Are bigger rooms good for long cat boarding stays?

They can be a particularly good choice for longer stays because they give cats more resting areas, different levels and more opportunity to move around and explore.

What is the best room for two or more cats?

For cats from the same family staying together, we generally recommend considering one of the larger room categories so each cat has space to choose where they want to rest.

Which rooms are best for cats who love windows?

The Estate is particularly appealing because it has two substantial windows. Many of our Grand Suites and Penthouse rooms also offer excellent outlooks.

What is the best boarding room for an older cat?

For cats with reduced mobility, our Senior Suites have lower platforms and easier-access resting areas. Active senior cats may also enjoy one of our larger suites.
